40 Years of Evolution in Dental Design- What Have We Learned?
After 40 years in the implant industry, what has clinical research taught me about implant designs and surgical protocols? With 33 US Patents on implant-related products, my 3 new patents could be a game changer in implant treatment options by simplifying surgical procedures, providing versatility and stability of implant-abutment connections, and reducing the potential for future complications, including peri-implantitis. I will discuss the evolution through five generations of successful implant designs and will separate clinical reality from marketing hype regarding implant designs, materials, surfaces as well as surgical protocols, and restorative procedures.
The participant is able to
1. Differentiate corporate-sponsored research designed to create marketing hype from valid, independent research that should inform our treatment decision.
2. Discuss the financial influences in the implant industry and the difference, if any, between a $39 implant and a $538 implant.
3.Describe the importance of the long-term success of the various body designs, materials, surfaces, and implant-abutment connections.
Gerald A. Niznick, DMD, MSD was the founder and President of Core-Vent and Paragon Dental Implant Companies (1982 -2001) and developed the Tapered Screw-Vent, Advent, and SwissPlus implants now sold by ZimVie. In 2004, he founded Implant Direct and created what is now known as the “value segment” of the dental implant industry, introducing a number of application-specific 1 and 2-piece implants with all-in-1 packaging. He served as President of Implant Direct through 2013 at which time he retired. Dr. Niznick graduated from the University of Manitoba Dental School in 1966, (renamed the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry in 2018), earned a Master's degree in Prosthodontics at Indiana University in 1968, and received Honorary Doctorate degrees from the University of Manitoba and Tel Aviv University. He has received Research Award from both AAID, ICOI, and the US Veterans Administration as well as the Goldman/Gershkoff award from AAID and the Alpha Omega Lifetime Achievement Medal for his contributions to implant dentistry. He has been issued 33 US dental implant patents including the 1986 internal conical connection (Niznick Patent #4,960,381) that has become the cornerstone of modern implant design. In March 2022 Dr. Niznick started his fourth implant company, again called Paragon Implant Co., and, as of December 2022, has filed 3 new patent applications on implant-related designs that are incorporated into Paragon’s new GEN5 Implant System.
